Budding Writers

Just before Christmas, Class 3 entered a writing competition. We had to write a saga in less than 50 words which is much harder than it sounds! We were delighted to hear that 23 of us have had our work chosen for publication.

We will be getting a complimentary copy of the book so you will soon be able to read all our sagas. In the meantime, here are a few to whet your appetite ...

Mouth Painting

Did you see the fantastic item on BBCs 'Inside Out' this week? It was about blind artist Sargy Mann.

This term the children in Class 1 have been learning about the body - how it works and sometimes how it doesn't work. In a lesson about disability the children tried painting with their mouths and found it was very difficult, especially trying to keep their hands behind their backs!

Samba Time

As part of their music lessons this term, Class 2 have been having Samba lessons. The photo shows the children playing surdo, tamborim, agogo and the snare drum.

Samba is recognised as a symbol of Brazil.

Wikipedia's definition is:
"The modern samba that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century is basically 2/4 tempo varied with the conscious use of chorus sung to the sound of palms and batucada rhythm, adding one or more parts or stanzas of declaratory verses. Traditionally, the samba is played by strings (cabaquinho and various types of guitar) and various percussion instruments such as tamborim."

Pancake Day Races

Armed with homemade pancake (or an El Paso fajita for those who cheated!!) and frying pan, the children limbered up on Tuesday 21st for the annual Charsfield Primary School Pancake Race!

There was a chill in the air but fortunately, unlike the week before, there was no snow on the ground.

The children lined up to receive the race instructions and then they were split into year groups.

Two lengths of the playground flipping the pancake 3 times on each length in the fastest time would be the winning formula, except for Class 1 who only had to complete one length - they do have shorter legs after all!

The finalists were split into Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 for one last lap which concluded with an all female first place finish - Grace for KS1 and Amber for KS2!

Chinese New Year

Monday 23rd January
Today we travelled to Dennington Primary School to celebrate the beginning of the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon. We were split into 6 groups, a mix of both ages and schools.

We made dragon masks, wrote our date of birth in Chinese numerals, made fans and tangrams. One of the funniest and hardest things to do was to use chopsticks. We tried with brussel sprouts and chick peas before attempting to eat our delicious Chinese dinner with them (sweet and sour chicken). Some of us managed to eat more lunch than others!!

Film Club – visit from London HQ!

On Wednesday 9th November, Dominic Laycock arrived at Charsfield School as part of parliamentary week to discuss democracy with all of us.

He showed us a short film made by young film clubbers from around the country about democracy. As a group we discussed what we had seen and gave our opinions.

Mr Laycock then showed us a film called ‘The Secret of Nimh’. We had a short interval (with popcorn and drinks!) before discussing this film. We got into small groups to discuss how we could make a difference. A democratic vote was taken to decide on the most popular pledge. This was to “help people if they are stuck”. The whole school has made this pledge and we all signed it.

Over the last 3 weeks Class One have been learning how to dance with Dennington School. We learnt how to do a Medieval dance, a Waltz and how to hand jive. It was hard work but a lot of fun and even the teachers joined in.

The whole school got together with Dennington and went on a trip to Bury Cathedral on 4th July. It was a truly beautiful place and the day was filled with 'Ooooh's and 'Ahhhhhhhh's coming from children and staff alike.

Summer Fayre

Thank you to all that supported this event. A brilliant time was had by everyone and we must acknowledge all the hard work put in by the Friends committee and all the volunteers who helped.

We managed to raise a whopping One Thousand Pounds!

This year, rather than the usual cycling profficiency test, we have brought in the help of the Bikability people. Children in Class 3 have been learning all about road safety, looking after their own bikes and generally increasing their confidence and awareness on the roads.

Class 3 Trip to Dunwich

We had a wonderful day at Dunwich beach, looking at the coastal erosion there, which we have been studying this term. The weather was amazingly kind and we managed to dodge the thunder storms and almost all the time we spent outside was in glorious sunshine, though there was a very dramatic moment in the museum where the weather thought it would add weight to the story that was being told of the big storm that destroyed a lot of 'Old Dunwich' by causing a power cut and adding fantastic thunder and lightening effects!

Once again our thanks go out to the organisers of another brilliant day at Thomas Mills. We learnt a lot about the science behind our favourite circus acts from Mr. Halls, like the tight rope walk, high dive and our favourite, the human cannon ball! With Mr. G. we made our own tight rope walkers in the DT rooms, using loads of cool tools!

A great day was had by classes 2 and 3 on the 9th June, when we all wnt to ITFC for a tour and to partake in activities.

We were taken round all the unseen areas, including the director's box, the 'dug out', the tunnel that all the players come out of and even the changing rooms, which were very plush!

To celebrate the Royal Wedding our first day back for the Summer Term was an exciting one! We all came dressed as princes and princesses and didn't we all look smart! Everyone made an effort, I'm not sure I've ever seen a more glamorous primary school! (Though there were some more unusual outfits, for example, the Zulu warrior and did I see Wills and Harry off to play polo?) We have to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of all the parents who provided such amazing party food. As you can see from the slide show of pictures below everyone really, really enjoyed it all!

Sporting events this half term.

On the 28th of March we went to Woodbridge Rugby Union Football Club for a tag rugby tournament. We took on some very tough teams and came out second from bottom, but we tried really hard. After the tournament we felt annoyed we hadn’t won but happy to have play there and to have won one match. Miss Tuckwell took us to the rugby and we had a great turn out from parents. !
On Thursday 22nd March, our net ball team,Ellie, Brittany, Franki, Harriet, Amber and captained by Millie, went to a High 5 Netball Tournament at Thomas Mills. We had to play against 8 schools. We played against Worthem A, Dennington, Worthem B, Occold, Thorndon , Wilby , Stoke Ash and Bedfield. We lost 5 games but we also won 2 games and drew one and came 7th out of 10 schools. Worthem A came 1st, Stoke ash in 2nd place and Wilby in 3rd place.

Cross Country Event at Stonham Aspall. It was a shame not to have had the sunshine of the last few days, but a great time was had by all. Our intrepid reporter, Florence said, “ It was very tiring and hard. At the beginning it was really noisy, everyone was shouting as the race started. But later when you were running on your own, it was really quiet. As I got closer to the end I felt much happier and relieved!” Well done to George Ferguson for coming 14th overall out of the boys!

Bowling was great fun

Class 1 went bowling this week and we had to do a lot of maths to work out the scores and add up how many pins we knocked over as we went along. What a surprise the bowling lanes were named after planets, we had Mercury and Venus.

Linking in with our film topic this term, Kate Elson, Aunt of one of our year 6 pupils, came in to school last week to tell us about some of her experiences working in the television and music video business.

Phil Barnes, from 'Bikini' talked to us about making movies. His company have made television adverts for products we all recognised, like shampoo ads and the ghd ad. They were also involved in the making of the film 'Streetdance' and have made music videos for some pretty famous names. They brought in a call sheet from a recent shoot with the rather popular new boy band 'The Wanted'!

Molly from Class 3 said, "It was amazing seeing adverts that we've seen on tele before and seeing the real people who made them!"

Thank you to all who donated money to this wonderful cause! All together we managed to raise over £130! £50 of which was raised by Class 2 and 3 girls who ran a cake stall in the outdoor classroom, so a huge well done to them!

Class 2 have made these wonderful Kaleisoscopes! We took a Pringles tube, (other tubes of crisps are available!), did some clever cutting and sticking, added some mirror card, in the shape of a triangular prism and a set of really good instructions to follow! We were all really pleased with the results!

Big Yellow Friday

Today we have been raising awareness for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation by holding our own Big Yellow Friday! We all donated one pound and wore something yellow. We had a 'Yellow Assembly', where Ted Chaervey's mum came and talked to us about Harry, Ted's brother who suffers from liver disease and the CDLF. We then sang 'yellow songs', had a yellow quiz, some of us even got to eat yellow buns!

Celebration of Schools' Music Day on 10th March 2011.

Classes 2 and 3 had an amazing experience performing at the Celebration of School's Music at Snape Maltings on 10th March 2011. We had been rehearsing hard to learn all the different dances - Waltz, Jive and Street, along with composing some of the music to accompany the dances. Class 2 had been doing lots of practise on their cornets to accompany a The Charleston, danced by children from Dennington.
It was a truly wonderful experience and huge thanks go to the organisers at Snape Maltings and to members of staff who made taking part possible.

Making the Planets

Class 1 have spent quite a while making the planets in our solar system out of paper mache for a classroom display. It has been hard work, but we are really pleased with the results.

Clothing Bank...

After the success of our 'Cash for Schools' clothing and textile collection last term, we have installed a permanent clothing bank for all to use. This is not just for the use of those from school, but also the wider community as well. So, please pass on the news to your friends and neighbours to feel free to dispose of their unwanted:

clothes and underwear, (any condition)

paired shoes, boots or trainers, (tied in pairs)

bedding, (not duvets or pillows)

curtains

towels

bags and belts

Items should be put into bags, don't worry if you can only part fill a bag, as these can be put together to make full bags. The bank will be emptied on a regular basis, approximately every 4-6 weeks. For every bag we collect, the school receives £1.50! The bank is situated behind the school, just off the Drift.

Do please note that our other recycling facilities are also available to the whole community, including the paper bank. These are situated round the front of the school behind the wooden gates on the right.

Baking Bread

Class 3 have been looking into Micro-organisms with Mrs. Merry in Science and last week we were looking at good microbes. This was brilliant as it gave us a really good excuse to bake some bread whilst looking at yeast!

Wider Opportunities Music

Since September Class 2 have been lucky enough to receive music lessons from Mr. McDowell from County Music Services. He has been teaching the children how to play the cornet. Each child has been loaned a cornet to use and practise on, they can even take them home!

My favourite quote from one of the children recently overheard in the corridor was, 'Mrs. McGeever, its not a cacophany anymore!' I think this shows that they are making lots of progress and I will add, the sounds coming from Class 2 are definitely no where near being a cacophony anymore, they are actually pretty mellifluous!

Safer Neighbourhood Teams Partnership Awards

Pirate Treasure Chests

Over half term Class One were set a challenge to create a treasure chest which cost no more than £2.00. The children were asked to put items inside which had a value to themselves or their family. As you can see the chests were beautiful and so cleverly made. The items inside were personal and touching, showing us how much thought the children put into their chests. It has been wonderful to work with our lovely children and their families.

Maths week

We had a brilliant time last week with our 'Maths week'. So many activities were organised for us, from baking to seeing a performance from a visiting theatre group. Dennington joined us for a maths trail around the school and grounds and we went there for a 'Maths Olympics'! We had loads of fun designing and making our own maths games and we then invited the parents to come in, have a play and tell us what they thought. In Class One we have been learning about healthy eating, because pirates didn't eat a very heathy diet. We thought about the food pirates should have eaten to stop them getting scurvy. Then we learned how to make healthy sandwiches (and ate them).

French Day in Class One

French Day was a very exciting affair in Class One. During the morning the children decorated hundreds of cakes for their 'Patisserie' which opened at 2pm. They worked very hard. In the afternoon the children learned how to do French skipping, play French cricket and then sold their cakes. They learnt how to count from one to ten in French and how to say the days of the week.

A huge thank you to all the grandparents who joined us for lunch today. We were thrilled at the turn out. Some travelled great distances to be there to support their grandchildren. We had attendees from London, Kent and even all the way from Sheffield! A great time was had by all and the children so enjoy showing off their classrooms and all their work.

On 23rd September Suffolk Share helped Class One organise a special day where parents and carers came into the school to share a fabulous morning of activities with their children. I think it is fair to say that we all had a lot of fun and everyone made fabulous pirate accessories for the children to play with and learn about being a proper pirate.

Book Club in Class 3

This week a new 'Book Club' began in Class 3. Each pupil was given a colourful folder, notebook and pen. The book we are reading is 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo. Ten pupils are taking part in the first book club at Charsfield and everyone is very enthusiastic. The book club is an initiative to promote reading at school by making it a fun, social event where ideas and opinions can be aired.

School Council 2010

This week the new school council had their first meeting. We discussed a new whole school initiative to promote the government's '5 A Day' fruit and vegetable scheme. The school council decided to launch a poster competition with entries in by 27th September, the date of the next school council meeting. Remember you can talk to your class representative if you have any issues you think the school council should discuss.

Mr. Peatfield and Miss Sandal from the High School Sports Partnership came in this Monday and worked with Class 3, helping them to learn games that they can go on to teach younger members of the school, encouraging team work, cooperation and leadership skills.

Last week Classes 2 and 3 were lucky enough to have a storytelling workshop every morning. Chip, Gloria and Tilda from Snail Tales, started the week by telling an amazing story. Over the week we learned how to share and interprate our ideas into stories of our own. It was a real priviledge to have them in school and the children learned a lot and got a huge amount of enjoyment out of the week.

On Wednesday the whole school, joined by Dennington were lucky enough to have Jonathan Beecher and Sarah Porter from Beecher Acoustics come and perform a concert. Jonathon performed on a 300 year old cello! Class One danced to the music and the older children were taken on a musical journey all round the world!

Welcome back to all pupils and staff after the summer holidays. Staff were in on Wednesday for our Professional Development Day. We were joined, in the morning, by staff from Dennington, as we are hoping to work increasingly closely with our partner school as time goes on.
The children have been settling in over this Thursday and Wednesday. Its always so exciting moving up to a new class and getting to know your new routine. Even more excited are those new children starting in reception, we welcome them to Charsfield and are sure they will be very happy here.
We've already had brilliant news! Last term Class 3 entered a competition to draw a picture inspired by the sea side. We received the news only yesterday that one of our new year 6s, Brittany Kemp, has won! So well done Brittany. Her prize was a lovely folder full of fun activities and advice to help her become an even better artist!

As a treat Mrs. Lee, along with Mrs. Ellison took the Eco Action Team to Minsmere RSPB Nature reserve for the day. They had such a great day, with the help of the Reserve's Mrs. June Smith and also from Mr. McGeever, who met us there.

Class 1 have just completed 12 weeks of swimming lessons at the Dolphin Pool. Everyone has improved their swimming skills and most children have gained impressive distance certificates. The lessons have proved so popular that we have already booked the pool for the summer term next year.

There were some absolutely amazing entries and the team found it nearly impossible to choose the winners. The imagination shown was truly brilliant and all entrants should be very proud of themselves. However, after lots and lots of discussion we finally managed to make a decision.

Quickstix Hockey at Debenham High School.

On Thursday 24th June, Charsfield submitted a team for the Quicksticks Hockey tournament at Debenham High. Quicksticks hockey is like normal hockey, but on a smaller scale and using a larger and lighter ball. It was great fun and as always the team put in a great effort. We were really pleased to come 4th, though it was really, really close and we had never played this sort of hockey before. Framlingham's Sir Robert Hitcham school came first, so well done to them and well done to all the schools who attended, the tournament was enjoyed by all.

Primary schools from around the area were invitied to a fantastic athletics event, yesterday morning, at Debenham High School. It was a glorious day for it and the children had a really good time. Events ranged from the Vortex Throw, Shot Put to Relay races. We were impressed as always by the team spirit and good sportsmanship shown by all the children.

A huge thank you to all at Debenham for organising this brilliant event!

Class 3 had a truly fantastic time last week at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in Sherringham, Norfolk. They were there for five days, accompanied by Mrs. McGeever, Mr. McGeever and Miss Tuckwell.

The children enjoyed numerous activities, including, the climbing wall, high ropes, team games, bike riding, obstacle courses, trips to the sea side and the infamous Super Swing!

With the year 5 and 6s off to Hilltop this week, we thought that we all deserved a treat and are camping out on the school field for the night!

Film Club

Film Club has been running for a few terms now and is really successful. It is open to all pupils and we have seen a wide variety of films from Ring of Brightwater to the Disney Pixar film Up. Refreshments are provided!

So why not come along? We have some lively discussion after the film and are learning how different our oppinions can be.

Class 1 have some caterpillars that they will be keeping a close eye on. Here is Rose showing one of the caterpillars which has already more than doubled in size in the last week! We are all looking forward to seeing them transform into beautiful butterflies.

Police come to Charsfield!

This week we were visited my PC Downey and PCSO Hassler.

Class 1 got to try on some items of uniform and check out the police car, Class 2 looked at the history of the Police force and were shown some old fashioned uniform and equipment and Class 3 talked about their rights and laws within society.

We were very grateful to PC Downey and PCSO Hassler for giving us their time and everyone really enjoyed it.

Hands on Sound

Dear Parents/Carers,
Would you like an educational opportunity for you and your child to use a Nintendo DS as a musical instrument? In conjunction with the education department at Aldeburgh Music, 25 people from our area have been offered the opportunity to take part in an Open Air performance as part of the Aldeburgh Festival entitled “Hands on Sound” which will take place on Aldeburgh Beach on 27th June 2010.

Matthew C Applegate has created a piece of software for the DS which will allow it to be used as an instrument. . Together with Duncan Chapman – a world renowned musician and performer - the participants will learn and rehearse a piece of music on either Saturday morning or afternoon and then rehearse it for the last time on Sunday morning, ready to perform on Aldeburgh Beach at 12.00pm.

All sessions will be held in Aldeburgh or nearby. Times will be finalised ASAP but days are definitely Saturday 26th (morning or afternoon, not both) and Sunday 27th (from roughly 10am to 1pm). Participants would have to be available for both days.

Aldeburgh Education would like to offer this opportunity to all of our students, as well as their siblings, parents, grandparents and friends. It is a fun and casual event for the whole family.

If your child doesn’t have a DS and would like to take part Snape Maltings can provide DS’s for you. If transport may be a problem please speak to me.

If you and/or your child is interested please complete the slip and return it to school by 21st May.

Rugby Tournament

On Friday 21st May, Class 3 from Charsfield took part in the small school rugby event at Sir Robert Hitcham's Primary Debenham. They did very well and came 2nd overall out of 8 teams. The team worked hard, improving with each game they played. Man Of The Match was Joseph Western.
